Risk and Readiness Lab

(Course & Toolkit)

Overview

The Risk and Readiness Lab is designed to help you step back and objectively assess your current position before making any major career or business decision.

Rather than relying on emotion, urgency, or external pressure, this course provides a structured way to evaluate:

  • Your current level of risk exposure
  • Your financial and professional readiness
  • Your capability to operate outside your current role
  • Your realistic options moving forward

By the end of this course, you will have a clear position and a defined pathway based on your own circumstances.

Module 1: The Risk Shift

Understand what actually changes when you go solo

Going solo isn’t just about freedom; it’s about responsibility.
In this module, you’ll understand how risk moves from the organisation to you, and how your work becomes more visible, more direct, and more outcome-driven.

You’ll learn how to operate in an environment where stability is no longer provided; it’s created.

You’ll Explore:

  • How risk shifts from the organisation to you when you go solo
  • Why your performance, decisions and outcomes become more visible
  • How expectations change when you are engaged for results rather than effort
  • Why reputation becomes one of your most important professional assets
  • What it means to create stability rather than have it provided for you

Focus:

Understand how risk, visibility and performance expectations shift when contracting, and why your reputation becomes increasingly driven by outcomes rather than effort.

Module 2: Financial Runway & Stability

Create the financial foundation that supports your move

Financial pressure is one of the biggest reasons solo moves fail, not because the work isn’t there, but because the timing is wrong.

In this module, you’ll gain clarity on your financial position and understand how runway creates space to make better, not reactive, decisions.

You’ll Explore:

  • Why financial runway creates more than security it creates decision-making space
  • The practical thinking behind the 3–6 month runway principle
  • The true costs of operating independently
  • Why revenue, income and available cash are not the same thing
  • How financial pressure can influence otherwise sound career decisions

Focus:

Understand your true cost structure, income and financial runway so you can make decisions from stability rather than financial pressure.

Module 3: Market Reality & Demand

Validate whether the market will actually pay for your work

Being good at what you do isn’t enough — the market has to recognise and value it.

This module helps you step outside your internal role and assess your position objectively, including how demand works and how different contracting pathways affect your exposure and control.

You’ll Explore:

  • The difference between being capable and being commercially in demand
  • How to assess whether the market will actually pay for what you do
  • Why being good at your job does not automatically translate into market value
  • How to articulate your capability in terms clients understand and value
  • The differences between agency and direct contracting, including the trade-offs in access, exposure and control

Focus:

Assess whether your capability translates into genuine market demand, how to communicate your value, and which contracting pathway best suits your position.

Module 4: Behavioural & Psychological Readiness

Shift how you operate, not just where you work

The biggest challenge in going solo isn’t technical, it’s behavioural.

This module focuses on how you think, decide, and operate when structure is removed. It also addresses the realities of independence, including isolation and decision load.

You’ll Explore:

  • The shift from employee mode to contractor mode
  • What ownership and initiative look like when organisational structure is removed
  • Why independence creates a different level of responsibility
  • The realities of isolation, administration and increased decision load
  • How your ability to operate independently can be just as important as your technical capability

Focus:

Develop the ownership, initiative and resilience required to operate independently while managing pressure, isolation and decision fatigue.

Module 5: The Decision Framework

Make the right move at the right time, and act on it

The goal isn’t to push you into going solo.
The goal is to ensure that when you move, it’s deliberate, structured, and aligned to your readiness.

In this module, you’ll define your position and translate it into a clear 90-day plan that prioritises stability and forward momentum.

You’ll Explore:

  • Why Stay, Prepare and Move can all be valid decisions
  • How to separate readiness from urgency
  • How to interpret your overall risk and readiness position
  • What needs to change before making your next move
  • How to translate your decision into a practical 90-day stabilisation plan
  • How to move forward deliberately without creating unnecessary risk

Focus:

Determine whether to move, prepare or stay based on your actual readiness, then translate that decision into a practical 90-day action plan.
